Their excuse for not educating was that the majority of their patients are discharged to another care facility. This statement was IRRELEVANT because every patient is different, and my grandma had stated to multiple staff that he was coming home. As a Registered Nurse, I am incredibly disappointed in this facility and their blatant neglect.
My grandfather was transferred here to work into the transition home after a total laryngectomy. This left him with a trach and the inability to speak. A MAJOR and IMPORTANT part of the hospital staffs job is to educate their patients on how to live at home and continue to live their lives to the highest quality possible given their new situation.
Bethesda gave our family a bad feeling from
My grandma nor my grandpa were given ANY education prior to discharge. Although my grandma was persistent and involved, she was taught NOTHING. Everything she learned was from hovering over the R/T's shoulder and constantly asking questions. Mind you, she has ZERO health care experience, so education is especially important in this case.
My father in law received good care here. It is different than the ICU he was transferred from so the first few days seemed rough because it is not staffed like an ICU. The majority of the staff were friendly and caring. The physicians kept us up to date and even caught something that the U of M had missed. The therapy department is awesome and worked very hard to give him the best chance at regaining independence. The RTs were great too and weaned him off the vent and got him talking. Unfortunately the trach tube ended up being permanent. My mother in law wanted to take him home so the staff had to teach her and his children how to do all his trach cares, and suctioning. Also learned how to transfer from PT and all other cares from nursing. They went over everything and made sure we were comfortable before discharge home.. He is now at home and fairly independent, able to spend time with family and even went to a Vikings game at the new stadium!
Trach care is a sterile procedure, and until I showed up on the day before discharge and demanded someone teach them SOMETHING, they had learned NOTHING. This is absolutely unacceptable. I asked the R/T about it and she stated it had been in the chart ordered, and if they weren't teaching then it was a mistake. This type of behavior is unacceptable, and while the rest of the care by the nurses was fine, and all of his needs were being met, it should be a team effort to ensure your patient is ready for discharge. This was not done.
My father in law was at Bethesda for several weeks. His care was exceptional! The staff was caring and kind. They helped us through a very difficult time. Instead of restraining him they had someone sit by his bed 2 4hrs a day. My father in law passed away and I am so glad we know he was cared for and respected on his final days.
I was in this hospital for 40 days and I really don't have anything bad to say other than they should do something with their food menu, it never changes and when one is in there that long it gets hard to eat the same things over and over. Other then a couple of my nurse aids that were not into their jobs my car was exceptional I had great overall care and the reason I don't give 5 stars is because nothing is perfect in this world.
Thanks Bethesda!
day one and ended in a nightmare. My dad went to Bethesda for ventilator weaning after a double lung transplant. My mom was there with him all day every day. I will mention that I'm an RN and so am very knowledgeable about what should and shouldn't have been happening in regards to my dad's care. Checks by nurses were only to give medications and he was not assisted with repositioning as often has he should have been. Once he was weaned off of the ventilator, he was moved out to the "step down" unit for continued rehab. He was having trouble sleeping at night. So, the doctor tried a couple of different sleeping medications. The last change she made was too high of a dose for him. The staff at night, both nursing and respiratory therapists, didn't recognize that the confusion he was having was due to lack of oxygen. He was given a small amount of supplemental oxygen and then not checked on again. When my mom came in that next morning, she found my dad had removed his gown in his confusion, was lying naked on his bed with the door wide open, unconscious and in the middle of having a cardiopulmonary arrest with no staff in sight. My mom had to be the one to call the Code Blue to get staff to come running. Do not enter!
