This is my favorite park to go to in the cities, especially in the winter. Visiting the conservatory is therapeutic. The warm, humid air with the smell of living plants gives me hope for a warmer future when it's -10 out. Love walking my dog around the lake. They have a water fountain for dogs, although I have yet to see a dog drink out of it. My own dog seems highly suspicious of it, but not sure why.
We went during the winter and only did the inside of the main conservatory. The plants are well labeled and there is a nice path you can take that goes through all the major areas. There is also a really helpful YouTube video of the North Garden you can watch to learn more about the plants in that area. There are two interactive areas for kids where there are hands on things to do. There is no entrance fee, just a suggested donation. Lastly it's nice and warm and you don't even need a jacket inside even when it's-5 degrees outside!
We went Christmas day, a family tradition. The children never tire of the visit, especially the Brazilian rain forest. We skipped the zoo displays this year as temperature was below 0 deg. In warmer seasons the attached outdoor Japanese garden is a meditative walk we highly recommend.
Great place for a walk or bike ride. Their conservatory is super cool. The zoo is alright, but not the best zoo ever. However it's free (with a suggested donation) so for a free activity you can't really complain. There's a building right on the lake that serves food and drinks in the warm season. Great place to hang out outdoors.
4. A rain forest with tropical fruit trees (banana, papaya, etc), spice plants and flowers.
We really appreciated the 75 cent lockers (bring quarters). You can get a moderate priced lunch there (next time maybe I'll try it).
1. A South American walk through aviary with its pond (Brazilian turtles and fish), aquariums and terrariums (snakes and tree frogs).
Spend an hour or two in a tropical jungle! We saw a sloth lounging in a tree and several canaries(?) And heard many others. The orchids were lovely and varied; I liked the way they were arranged naturalisticly.
3. A fern rain forest with babbling brook.
5. Bonsai display.
Visited the indoor gardens with there wide variations of flowers and fauna. The displays in several rooms included:
2. A greenhouse garden of sculpture and seasonal flowers.
The poinsettias did not disappoint in a beautiful formal sculpture garden.
